Oscar recap

Congratulations Helen.

Well done!

And you too, Marty.

Way to go Kevin!

I’m sorry that I haven’t seen your movies. But I plan to.

Favorite shadow puppet:
Happy Feet.

Best dressed:
Steve Carrell

Where was he?
Matt Damon

Where was she?
Julia Roberts

Favorite montage:
the nominees at the beginning

Best presenters:
The kiddos

Best acceptance speech:
Toss up between Whitaker and Thelma – the film editor for The Departed

I like the Oscars. They’re long, they’re boring, but I like the tradition and the formality and the glitz and the…I don’t know. Am I a bad person? What is it that makes me interested in the successes and failures of people I do not know?

Huh.

Anyway, I like them and I’m not going to overanalyze it. If you missed 'em - come on over. I've got it on TiVo.

Speaking of Helen Mirren, tune in next time when I tell you why I love Calendar Girls – the movie, not, like, in general.

one more recommendation

Okay, this is the last time I'm going to say this.

Notes on a Napkin.

If you haven't read it, you should.

Seriously, why are you still here?

Meh.

Looking for something to read?

You must be, or you would not be here.

I really do love language. I wish that I knew more of them, but I'm only proficient in the one (that being English). I enjoyed this article by Ben Yagoda at Slate.com about how blogging is saving the fate of the interjection.

And if you don't know what an interjection is, um, ask your mother.

Like herding cats.

Hey, moose! You're blocking my turn!
Moose. What can you do? They just never learn.

What are you all still doing here?

Haven't you given up hope? I know that I would have if I were you.

Okay, so I know that I haven't posted in almost two weeks (boo), and I had a little picture montage to show you all the crazy things that I've been up to. The problem is that my home internet is not working, and the signal that I'm stealing from my neighbor isn't strong enough to upload pictures (who knew?).

So the montage will have to wait, as will the explanation of my life.

It's all coming!

Just not until this weekend.

Horseshoes and Hand Grenades

I rarely struggle with perfectionism. Ask anybody. I am a firm believer that close enough is very often close enough. I like phrases like "let's play it by ear" and "good enough for government work" and "-ish." I also like the phrase "I'm so thirsty, I could drink a horse!" but that's unrelated.*

I'm glad that I've started on the loosey goosey end of the pendulum swing because my profession tends to make people a little more...how you say...anal.

Accountants aren't allowed to have broad, sweeping ideas, laden with potentiality. We are the realists because we are the ones who have to pick up the pieces when the party's over. We live not in the future but in the past and make statements like "things would be a lot easier for you next time if you saved your receipts," and "I really need to get the detail of your retained earnings account by function." Ugh.

But it's good for me as a non-detail person to be trained in the pennies and nickels of life, because sometimes the devil is in there.

And I really don't like the devil.

My first successful omelet flip

Now I'm no sikegami, but I thought you all might like to be a part of this.

I have decided that it's time to learn how to cook eggs.
